For city dwellers, meal delivery is everyday convenience—but for residents on Scandinavia’s thousands of islands, it has long been out of reach. Norway, Sweden, and Finland collectively boast nearly 700,000 islands, many accessible only by ferry or long drives.
Norwegian start-up Aviant is changing that with Scandinavia’s first food delivery service by drone, starting on the Swedish island of Värmdö, just 13km from Stockholm. Residents can now order freshly made burgers from Bastard Burgers delivered directly to their door via drone.
Since February, the service has been in beta, delivering a handful of meals each week while testing the system and ensuring food arrives hot and fresh.
Aviant is also planning a similar launch on the Norwegian peninsula of Nesodden, four miles from Oslo by air but a 29-mile road journey. Over the next two years, the company aims to expand to around 40 bases across Scandinavia, with potential for similar services in Canada and the northeastern United States.
While weather can occasionally ground drones, Aviant co-founder Lars Erik Fagernæs expects around 90% uptime, highlighting the potential for drone technology to bring convenience once reserved for cities to remote and semi-rural communities.
