What version of MacOS am I using?

You are here:

How to check current Version?

In the top left corner of your screen click on the apple logo. Then select “About This Mac”.
You’ll see the macOS name, such as macOS Mojave, followed by its version number.

What are the recent macOS versions?

  • 11.0: Big Sur – 2020
  • 10.15: Catalina – 2019
  • 10.14: Mojave – 2018
  • 10.13: High Sierra – 2017
  • 10.12: Sierra – 2016
  • 10.11: El Capitan – 2015
  • 10.10: Yosemite – 2014
  • 10.9 Mavericks – 2013
  • 10.8 Mountain Lion – 2012
  • 10.7 Lion – 2011

Should I update?

Apple normally only maintains and supports the last few versions. If you are running Sierra (10.12) or lower, you’ll no longer be supported meaning certain applications may not work on your mac. At the end of 2020 High Sierra (10.13) will also stop being supported.

Upgrading is free and as long as you mac is not too old ( or before), you should be able to update to the latest version.

How do I upgrade?

Firstly make sure you have an up to date and working backup, ideally using apples backup software “Time Machine”.

If you have that you can follow the apple guide here.
